How to shape the nighttime landscape of plants in lighting design

  Landscape lighting is an important component of outdoor lighting design, creating different atmospheres through the fusion of light and natural landscapes. So how should the nighttime landscape of plants be designed in lighting design?

  First, the choice of lighting direction. Plant lighting is basically divided into three lighting directions: upward irradiation, downward irradiation, and side irradiation.

  1) Upwardly shining lights can create a memorable effect.

  2) Downward shining lights, following the direction of sunlight, can provide a very natural look.

  3) Side-lit lights emphasize the structure and resulting image of trees, allowing the shade to create an image landscape effect.

  Second, the illumination of plant morphology

  1) For plants with translucent leaves, place the luminaires below the canopy so that the leaves can be bright;

  2) For plants with lush branches and leaves, place the luminaires on the outside of the canopy to highlight the branches and leaves;

  3) Background lighting technology can effectively showcase those lush, thick-leaved trees; placing the luminaires outside the crown of the trees can emphasize the overall tree shape while relatively weakening the texture of the branches and leaves themselves;

  4) For slender, densely branched, pen-shaped plants, using upwardly shining concentrated luminaires can better show the tree shape and overall shape of the plant;

  5) Trunk lighting can be subtle or intense, depending on the appearance of the trunk itself and its connection to other illuminated parts. Trunk lighting also includes creating an outline effect through side and front lights that highlight details and colors.

  6) If the plant becomes the main scene, to show its depth, surround the plant with radial lights; when a large tree serves as a transition point or background element in the scenery, small-scale spotlights can be effectively used to create a vivid but not exaggerated effect.

  Third, the relationship between the placement of luminaires and plants.

  When considering the placement of lighting fixtures, designers must understand the current and future growth and tree shape changes of the plants, so that the plants can produce good lighting effects both during rapid growth and in their mature form in the future.

  1) Install the luminaires at the position where the trees will be mature, so that the luminaire positions will not change in the future.

  2) Secure the luminaires to the main stem of the plant to ensure that plant growth does not affect the position of the luminaires.

  3) Regularly and reasonably prune plants to ensure the normal use of lighting fixtures.

  4) Leave a certain amount of movement space for the luminaires and wiring, and adjust them appropriately according to plant growth.
